UGANDA PRISONS SERVICE EMERGES BEST OVERALL WINNER AT NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL SHOW 2026

The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has been crowned the Best Overall Winner at the 32nd National Agricultural Show 2026 held at the National Agricultural Show Grounds in Jinja City, strengthening its position as one of Uganda’s leading institutions in agricultural production, innovation, and skills development.

The Service also won several top awards, including Best Livestock Demonstration Institution, Best Innovative Institution, and Best Farmer Field School, in recognition of its strong contribution to modern agriculture and practical demonstration of successful farming practices.

While presenting the awards, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Hon. Desire Muhooza, commended the Uganda Prisons Service for its continued commitment to agricultural transformation, innovation, and support for national food security.

During her tour of the Uganda Prisons exhibition Centre, Hon. Desire Muhooza praised the level of innovation, organization, and professionalism displayed by the Service. She especially appreciated the practical demonstrations that showed how agriculture can be used as a tool for wealth creation and economic empowerment.

One of the main attractions at the exhibition was the Innovation Village, where UPS demonstrated how the Parish Development Model (PDM) Shs1 million investment can transform livelihoods and increase household income through integrated crop and animal production. The demonstrations offered simple and practical lessons on how small investments can grow into sustainable income sources.

Visitors also saw a wide range of agricultural activities, including commercial crop production, seed multiplication, livestock breeding, poultry farming, fish farming, irrigation systems, and value addition projects. These activities continue to position Uganda Prisons Service as a Centre of excellence in agricultural production and training.

For more than three decades, the Uganda Prisons Service has played an important role in Uganda’s agricultural value chain. Beyond food production for inmates, the Service has become a major producer of maize, beans, cotton, vegetables, and livestock products, while also offering practical agricultural training.

Through prison farms across the country, UPS continues to support national food production, skills development, and rehabilitation by equipping inmates with farming skills that help them reintegrate into society.

This year’s National Agricultural Show gave the Service a platform to showcase its achievements in agriculture, innovation, engineering, and production. The recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of prison officers and technical teams who continue to drive agricultural success.

The achievement highlights the Service’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and national development. Agriculture remains a key pillar in the Uganda Prisons Service’s efforts to promote self-reliance, productivity, and socio-economic transformation.

The recognition has been welcomed across the Service, with staff describing it as a reward for years of commitment to modern and improved agricultural practices.

The victory not only crowns the Uganda Prisons Service as the top performer of the 2026 National Agricultural Show but also reinforces its role as a leading institution in agricultural innovation, production and sustainable development in Uganda.
