UGANDA PRISONS, UNODC STRENGTHEN LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIP

For many years, the Uganda Prisons Service and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have maintained a strong partnership that has delivered significant results in strengthening correctional services, security and access to justice. During a meeting held today at the Uganda Prisons Headquarters, the Commissioner General of Prisons, Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, welcomed the new UNODC Head of Office in Kampala, Ms. Winnie Jeptum Bargoria and commended the organization for its continued support in building the capacity of prison staff to manage Violent Extremist Prisoners, strengthening prisons intelligence systems, improved health services and supporting the installation of video teleconferencing infrastructure in selected prisons

Dr. Byabashaija noted that the partnership has greatly contributed to the modernization of prison operations and improved service delivery across the country.

Ms. Bargoria praised Uganda Prisons for the progress made in correctional management and reforms. She reaffirmed UNODC's commitment to working closely with the Service in the future. Both leaders pledged to deepen cooperation in areas of good governance, accountability, rehabilitation and social protection for the benefit of the correctional system and the communities it serves.
