An armory is one of the most sensitive facilities within any security installation. In a prison unit, an armory is the designated place where firearms, ammunition and other security apparatus are stored, maintained and accounted for. Because of the critical role it plays in security operations, it requires well-trained and disciplined personnel to manage it.
To strengthen professionalism and accountability in armory management, 158 Uganda Prisons Armory Personnel drawn from major prison units across the country have successfully completed a refresher training course in the management, storage and accountability of firearms and related security equipment.
The pass-out ceremony was presided over by Mr. John Bosco Tumwebaze, Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons in charge of Prisons Administration.
During the training, participants were equipped with practical and theoretical skills in arms handling and armory operations. The course covered Skills at Arms, AK-47 operations, armory management, computer literacy, fire safety precautions, security control systems, ethical conduct, effective communication, record keeping, arms correspondence and custody of keys.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tumwebaze commended the participants for their commitment and urged them to apply the knowledge acquired to enhance security and accountability in their respective stations.
The training is expected to improve professionalism among armory personnel, strengthen record management systems, enhance accountability and equip officers with the knowledge and skills required to safely manage firearms and armories.
The course was organized by the Department of Security and Operations, which is responsible for maintaining security in prison establishments, coordinating operational preparedness, managing security assets and ensuring compliance with established security procedures across the Service.
Uganda Prisons Service has continued to invest in capacity building for personnel holding critical responsibilities. In recent years, the Service has conducted specialized training for Data Clerks and Receptionists, Gatekeepers, Drivers, Custodial Health Workers, Storekeepers and other key staff to improve efficiency and service delivery.
With the completion of this training, the 158 officers are expected to strengthen accountability in the management of firearms and ammunition, maintain accurate records, observe safety standards, safeguard government property and support the overall security of prison establishments.
